The No1 Lounge at Jersey Airport presented a unique set of challenges for the lighting design, largely driven by the exceptional levels of natural daylight within the space. Large windows and a substantial central atrium with a rooflight create an incredibly bright and naturally illuminated environment during the day, while also making the positioning and specification of luminaires particularly challenging. Our approach needed to work harmoniously with the architecture and respond to these changing conditions, ensuring the lounge remained comfortable, functional and visually balanced throughout the day.
While the space benefits enormously from its natural light during daylight hours, careful consideration was needed to ensure the lounge retained its atmosphere and character into the evening. We achieved this by making use of the architectural features throughout the space, integrating lighting wherever possible to create layers of illumination without compromising the clean and considered interior. Rather than relying solely on conventional overhead lighting, the scheme uses architectural details, decorative elements and integrated sources to provide a softer, more atmospheric environment as natural light fades.

As the only dedicated passenger lounge at Jersey Airport, the space has an important role in the overall passenger experience. We wanted the lighting design to celebrate what makes this lounge so distinctive, highlighting its architectural features, materiality and connection to the island. Working closely with No1 Lounges, Resident Architects and wider project team, we developed a scheme that allows the lounge to transform naturally from a bright, light-filled environment during the day into a warm and inviting space in the evening, ensuring its unique character can be experienced at every stage of the passenger journey.
